Bedrock/Surficial Geology

Bedrock : Monkton Quartzite

Formed in the Cambrian (543-490 Ma) monkton quartzite is the result of what use to be shallow water sediment along the shores of the lapetus ocean. These very hard rocks were once sandy beaches which explains the ripple mark features in the stone from historic tides.

Surficial Geology : FaE (Farmington extremely rocky silt loam)

HnB (Hinesburg sand loam)

Our site consisted of two different soil types FaE and HnB. The first type is usually found on slopes of 20-50% grade. This soil was found around the areas of several steep ledges more to the southern side of our hectare. The second type was found in our soil pit in the north western side of the hectare. This soils are formed on 3-8% slopes which correlated with the location on our site. These soils were found around the gravel hill and at the northern most portion of our site where the land was relatively flat.
